Upcountry Maui offers a cooler, more rural contrast to the island’s beach and resort areas. The term generally describes communities and agricultural landscapes on the slopes of Haleakala, including Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula. A half-day can provide an introduction, while a full day allows time for gardens, farms, food, and scenic stops without rushing.
Plan the route before leaving the coast
Upcountry roads climb quickly and can be narrow, winding, wet, or foggy. Temperatures may be substantially cooler than at the beach. Bring a layer, water, sun protection, and a realistic driving plan. Avoid relying on unmarked shortcuts, and do not enter private roads, farms, or residential property without permission.
Makawao provides shops, galleries, and food in a compact town setting. Kula spreads across a larger hillside area, so attractions that appear close on a map may require meaningful driving time.
Choose a few current destinations
Potential stops include Ali’i Kula Lavender, Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery, MauiWine, Surfing Goat Dairy, and Kula Botanical Garden. These are independent businesses. Reservations, admission, age restrictions, menus, tour formats, and operating days can change, so confirm details directly before driving there.
Combine stops thoughtfully
Choose two or three primary stops and leave room for lunch, weather, and slow roads. If Haleakala is part of the day, review the National Park Service planning information separately because park entry, sunrise access, elevation, weather, and drive time require additional preparation.
